Introducing The 2024 Lexus GX

June 28th, 2023 by

In January of 2002, at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Michigan, Lexus debuted a luxury SUV based on Toyota’s popular Prado, a vehicle we don’t get here in the United States. It was called the GX470, and it shared its suspension with the Toyota 4Runner. The GX could tow 5,000 lbs when it debuted, which was later upgraded to 6,500 lbs, and it featured the venerable 4.7-liter V8 that is a workhorse motor for Toyota and Lexus. In 2009 when Lexus debuted the second generation GX, it now featured a 4.6-liter V8 mated to a new 6-speed automatic transmission, up from the previous generation’s 5-speed, improving fuel mileage. Towing was still 6,500 lbs, and as an off-roader, the GX was stout. To date, it is one of the best pre-owned vehicle purchases for overlanders and off-roaders.

All-New, All-Better

With the all-new third-generation, the 2024 Lexus GX has debuted as an even better SUV for all of your needs. Riding on the same GA-F platform as the first-ever Lexus TX, the GX550 is a serious do-it-all sport utility that is 3.74 inches wider, 2.36 inches of longer wheelbase, and an overall length that is 2.75 inches more. If you opt for the new Overtrail trim level, the GX is 4.25 inches wider.

True Luxury & Usability

The GX550 will allow you to carry up to 7 passengers with 3 rows of seats and tow as much as 8,000 lbs. The Luxury and Luxury+ trim levels tow 6,990 and 6,780 lbs, respectively. When it comes to a pure luxury SUV, there isn’t much on the market that can compete with the GX, especially in the towing department.

Trim Levels

Starting out with the GX550 Premium trim, you can move up to the Premium+, Overtrail, Overtrail+, Luxury, and Luxury+. The Premium trim levels ride on standard 20-inch wheels, while the Overtrail models come with 18” wheels, and the Luxury models will get 22-inch wheels.

Power For Days

With its all-new and distinctive styling comes a new 3.4-liter twin-turbo V6 putting out 349 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque. Putting that power to the pavement is a 10-speed automatic transmission that sends all that power to a full-time four-wheel drive system. If you decide to go off-roading in your GX, fear not, as a Torsen limited-slip locking differential on all trims, except Overtrail models, add an electronic locking rear differential.

A Hybrid model will debut at a later date.

Safety & Technology

Lexus does safety well, and the GX550 is no different. Standard is the Lexus Safety System+ 3.0, which features a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, all-speed dynamic radar cruise control, lane tracing assist, lane departure alert with steering assist, road sign assist, and proactive driving assist.
