Celebrating Women’s History Month at Lexus of Henderson

March 7th, 1982, was the very first day of the very first Women’s History Week. Over the next several years, Congress did a lot of work advancing the national celebration until over a decade later, in 1995, the President proclaimed the entire month of March as Women’s History Month. The President has been repeating this proclamation every year since, and we’re pleased to be able to spend this month studying, observing and celebrating the essential role that women have played throughout American history. Here at Lexus of Henderson, we thought we’d highlight some of the most impactful women in the history of automotive and shine a light on the wonderful women working right here in our dealership.

Women’s History in the Automotive Industry

While we’re certain there have been tons of women that have and continue to leave a lasting legacy on the automotive industry, today we thought we’d highlight two incredible women whose impact we all probably experience on a daily basis and might not realize. One such woman is without a doubt Helene Rother, who went to work for General Motors in 1943 and became the first female automotive designer in Detroit. Many of her designs are the basis of designs still used today, and she was very deservedly inducted into the Automotive Hall of Fame posthumously in 2020.

While Helene was, according to newspapers, making three times as much as her male counterparts even in the ‘40s, other women never received the official recognition for their contributions to automotive history. Florence Lawrence was a movie star, but she also was the originator of the earliest turn signals and brake signals, predecessors for what we have today. Both of these women have left incredible legacies on the landscape of automotive, and we’re happy to recognize them!
