Invoking a Lexus Concept Car’s Conceptual Essence

An earlier version of Shaped by Air was shown at Miami’s Institute of Contemporary Art, during its Art & Design Week of 2022. Then as now, it celebrates Reddy’s and Lexus’ shared commitment to human-centered, carbon-neutral well-crafted design. Reddy reimagined her vision for her ethereal installation in Milan which is described as an immersive installation inviting visitors to discover Lexus’ Electrified Sport concept vehicle within a forest of its composite shapes. These shapes reflect its design as shaped by air.

The shapes are comprised in part of post-consumer materials. At first, they appear abstract, but upon a closer look, they reveal themselves as an outline of Lexus’ concept vehicle. Reddy describes her design ethos as a “form follows feeling” approach. She carefully calibrated Shaped by Air’s environment to be welcoming, contemplative, and enveloping, while conveying a feeling of walking through a forest complete with appropriate sound and light effects while an elevated lounge provides an area for reflection. Besides Lexus’ Electrified Sport concept, this provides another connection to Lexus as central to Lexus values is omotenashi—a concept encompassing both hospitality and mindfulness.

Says Suchi Reddy: “Lexus’ continued commitment to innovationand their support of an artistic approach as a confluence of art and designled me to envision this immersive experience as both a sculpture and a multisensory spatial experience,”
